As summer is approaching quickly, temperatures rising steadily, some of us are still looking for a cheap escape during the dreaded shutdown week (St. Mary’s) in August.

I really enjoy working on multi-city itineraries, basically flying out on a cheap flight and then looking for onward connections until you can find a cheap flight back home. I’ve found a few options, which I will present on our blog one by one over the next few days/weeks. ?

I hope you find an option that works for you, really looking forward to your feedback!

Option #1: Baden-Baden, Frankfurt, Cologne, Berlin (or Hamburg)

You can catch a flight on the 11th of August to Baden-Baden (FKB) (operated by Ryanair) for just about 39,46 EUR. Once there you’ll have multiple options – head out to Straßbourg or Baden-Baden – or go to Rastatt, which is the closest village next to the airport with a train station, by bus (departs from the terminal) and catch a train to Frankfurt am Main.

A train from Rastatt to Frankfurt will cost you about 19,90 EUR if booked in advance and the train ride will take about 1h 30m.

You can explore Frankfurt for a few days before heading out to Cologne, again, by train – which will cost about 19,90 EUR as well as taking roughly 1h 30m.  After exploring Cologne for a few days you have two choices. You can either head to Berlin or to Hamburg (both by flight). Cologne-Berlin and Cologne-Hamburg are both very competitive routes and flight prices start from 9,98 EUR with a large selection of flight times.

Flight from Cologne (CGN) to Berlin (SXF) with Ryanair, 9,98 EUR

Flight from Cologne (CGN) to Hamburg (HAM) with Eurowings, 27,99 EUR

When heading to Hamburg, your earliest flight home to Malta is on Sunday the 19th August – for 30,00 EUR with Condor (direct). You will pay a total of 137,24 EUR for this option (luggage not included, about 60,00 EUR for luggages on all flights).

Flight from Hamburg (HAM) to Malta (MLA) with Condor, 29,99 EUR

When heading to Berlin, your earliest flight home to Malta is on Sunday the 19th August – for 21,99 EUR with Ryanair (direct). You will pay a total of 111,23 EUR for this option (luggage not included, about 68,00 EUR for luggages on all flights).

Accommodation

There’s heaps of cheap hotels around Germany. Another option which I like to use a lot is Airbnb, if you haven’t registered with Airbnb yet you can use our link and receive 21 EUR off your first trip (subject to a minimum booking value of 64 EUR).
